How Do I Restrict Who Can Edit an Agent?

Last updated: May 14, 2026

There are two ways to do this: (1) set the agent's General Access to Viewer or Use Only so the people it's shared with can't edit it, or (2) put restricted users into a Custom Role that blocks agent editing org-wide.

Option 1: Lock the Agent Down via Share Settings

This is the simplest approach when you just need to restrict editing on a specific agent. It works whether the agent lives in your personal space or in a team.

  1. Open the agent and click Share (top-right).
  2. Under General Access, choose the audience (Team, Organization, or Anyone with link) and set the role to Viewer or Use Only.
    • Viewer — can see the agent's configuration but can't change anything.
    • Use Only — can chat with the agent but can't see its instructions, tools, or any internal details. Best for end users.
  3. If the agent lives in a team, the audience is locked to Team as the minimum. Pick Team + Viewer or Team + Use Only to give everyone on the team read-only or chat-only access.
  4. Under Users, add the specific people who should be able to edit and set their role to Editor.

Anyone not explicitly added as an Editor will only be able to view or use the agent — they can't make changes.

Option 2: Block Agent Editing Org-Wide With Custom Roles

If you need to stop a whole group of users from editing any agent across the organization, use Custom Roles.

  1. Go to Settings → Custom Roles.
  2. Create a new role (or open an existing one).
  3. Open the Features tab and enable the agent modification restriction toggle. Users in this role won't be able to create, update, or delete agents anywhere in the org.
  4. Open the Users tab and assign the people who should be restricted.

A user has to be an organization admin or security role holder to configure Custom Roles. See the Custom Roles documentation for the full list of restriction toggles.
